In the Dark Ages, many advances in art that the Greeks and Romans developed such as realistic anatomy and perspective were lost. Realism was replaced with symbolism in the artwork. 
However, beautiful expressions of faith were created in illuminated manuscripts, monasteries, and cathedrals. These monuments of stone were highly symbolic of Christian doctrine.
